Most workers in the UK (65%) want to feel a strong sense of belonging at work but half this number (34%) do not consider their workplace to be a ‘community’. In fact, 27% feel like outsiders at work. Clearly something is wrong and needs to change. Discover the significant benefits of having a workplace community.
What is a Workplace Community
The above findings were from the O.C. Tanner’s 2023 Global Culture Report. According to this survey, there are 8 key factors that provide a strong sense of community in the workplace:
- shared goals
- commitment
- communication
- feedback
- camaraderie
- trust
- adaptation
- unity
What do UK Employees Want from their Workplace?
Most UK workers (73%) reported camaraderie/relationships with colleagues as the most important aspect of feeling part of the community at work.
“Thriving cultures have a strong sense of community that brings and holds employees together,” says Georgia Portwain, Culture and Engagement Strategist from workplace culture expert O.C. Tanner.
“Employees who feel that they belong will stay at the company for longer, will be more resilient to change and are more likely to deliver great work.”
The Significant Benefits of Having a Workplace Community
The report also showed that employers with a score high on the ‘community index’ are 100% more likely to have workers that produce aspirational levels of work.
They also have a lower probability (58%) of their employees actively looking for another job.
Despite the significant benefits of having a workplace community, only half of UK workers believe that creating a community is a priority for their organisational leaders.
Portwain adds, “Leaders need to recognise that having a strong and sustaining workplace community is the foundation of organisational success, and so they must find ways to bring their people together and create an environment of trust, unity and appreciation.”
