New Year, New Career

The start of a new year is often a time of change – we make resolutions, maybe we break them, but most of us use it as an opportunity to think about what we want from the 12 months ahead. If a new career is something you’ve been thinking about for a while then the start of 2018 might well be the time to make more than just a New Year’s resolution to do it.

You’re thinking about it – and so are employers

A lot of people start actively looking for new career opportunities at this time of year and, as a result, employers tend to be very alert to the possibility of new talent too. Some will have even set recruitment targets to take advantage of the increase in market activity. So, if you’re ready for a new career this is a great time to start looking.

New Year, fresh budget

Even if the company you want to work for isn’t actively looking for new employees they will most likely have recently set new budgets for 2018. Take advantage of these fresh allocations of cash to see if there might be an opportunity for you available. Instead of waiting to hear from your dream employer, contact them direct. At this time of year when there’s room in the budget they might be much more open to discussing a potential role for you.

Take advantage of a positive year-end

If you’ve had a good year at work and there are positive end of year reviews to show for it – even a bonus – then this will help to bolster your CV and make you a more attractive candidate. From the point of view of a new employer, it’s always better to be leaving your current position on a high and straight after a positive year-end is a great time to do that.

Starting the search for your new career

Are you in the right role? As the old year comes to a close many of us feel like perhaps we should be doing more – or feeling less stressed. So, this is a great time to start evaluating whether your current position really gives you what you want from life. Do you have the flexibility you want from your current job, are the prospects there and how do you feel about current salary and benefits?

Who do you really want to work for? This might seem like a very open question but start by making a list of the companies or organisations that you feel you’d like to work for. For each one, identify why it is that you want to work for that business. If the reasons is a solid one then find the HR contact and get in touch.

How can you get the job? There are many ways to ensure that you have the best possible chance of getting that job. Revamp your CV so that it’s up to date and engaging, practice your interview questions technique and learn how to boost your confidence so that you impress all those you meet. Make sure you read up around the businesses you’re keen to be employed by so that you can easily answer the all important “why do you want to work here?”
