A positive mindset is one of the most powerful tools that anyone can have. This doesn’t mean that you’re unrealistically upbeat about life but that you are always looking for reasons to stay focused, be grateful and for opportunities to progress and grow. This kind of thinking is like a muscle that needs to be flexed to become routine – these are our tips on how to make that happen.
- How you start the day matters. Your day will feel very different if you’re dragging yourself out of bed, late for work and don’t have a morning routine that’s designed for you. A short morning routine you can do every day will really set you up for a more positive experience, whether that’s making time to read or meditate, getting some exercise or eating a tasty breakfast.
- Start to notice the language that you use. If you always opt for a negative instead of a positive then changing the language you use could help to shift your perspective. Start to become aware of how you respond to people – are you the first to gossip or complain or to share good news and compliments?
- Make exercise a priority. When we exercise our bodies are flooded with feel-good chemicals, which can provide an instant positivity boost. Make time to include at least 30 minutes of exercise in your schedule each day – choose exercise you love, whether that’s dancing, crossfit or roller skating.
- Celebrate all your small wins. As you go through your day, notice when you’ve completed something, improved something or met a deadline – celebrate each one and your satisfaction and confidence will grow.
- Give yourself the chance to rest. One of the reasons it can be hard to maintain a positive mindset is when we get to a point of exhaustion or tiredness where we start to burn out. It’s essential to ensure you’re giving your body and mind time to rest if you want to stay positive and focused. That could be sitting with a book or going for a gentle walk.
- Practice visualisation. Visualisation can be a powerful aid to helping you to reach your goals and pulling yourself out of a negative place. Sit back, close your eyes and visualise where you want to go next or what you’re hoping to achieve, right down to the smallest detail. This can be a relaxing exercise and help to improve your focus.
- Try meditation. It’s not a cure for everything but meditation gives your mind a moment to detach from any emotional narratives that are spinning around inside your head. You’ll find it easier not to get so caught up in your feelings and find positivity less hard to maintain.
- Surround yourself with positive people. We are heavily influenced by the people that we spend the most time with so make sure that those that you have in your life are positive, supportive and as invested in mental wellbeing as you are.
These are some simple tips to help you create a more positive mindset going into 2021 and find plenty of time to unwind.
