A new survey of 5,000 employees in the UK has revealed that the average age of workers looking to change careers is 31 nationally. Regardless of age, of the workers surveyed, a quarter responded they were considering a career change in the ‘not-too-distant’ future. Half of those asked had already changed careers and the majority stated they had ‘never looked back’. Let’s read on and see if you have the career change itch.

What are the top reasons for a career change?

Out of those surveyed, these were the top reasons for taking the plunge, can you relate;

  1. Better earning opportunities (33%)
  2. Yearning for roles they are more passionate about (32%)
  3. A better work life balance (19%)
  4. Redundancy (15)

 

How long do employees plan a career change?

Given the current economic climate and cost of living, the survey found that employees are taking their time before making any big career changes. The average time frame for planning a career move is 13 months, from first considering a move to landing a job.

However, if a worker has already decided to take the plunge and have a career change, then the average time spent is 10 months.

What puts workers off making a career change?

Out of those surveyed, these were the reasons most commonly stated for thinking twice about a career change:

  1. Financial insecurity (27%)
  2. A lack of confidence (23%)
  3. Uncertainty about skills (20%)
  4. Worried about being too old (15%)

What do workers think of taking a temporary job to make a career change?

Half of those surveyed said they would consider taking a temp role to make a career change with just under half saying this would give them greater flexibility. A third responded to say that taking a temporary job to make the career jump would help them create opportunities and experience in other industries.

 

Would workers consider going back to a previous employer?

In another blog, we talked about the rise of the ‘boomerang employee’, as they’ve been coined. A third of those surveyed said they would consider taking a job with a company they’ve worked at previously. In fact, 13% had already done so.

The biggest reasons for becoming a ‘boomerang employee’ were:

  1. Proximity to home (12%)
  2. The feeling of safety with the company (9%)
  3. Direct asks from employers to return to the business (9%)
