To find out which industries and job sectors have the highest level of welfare, Phoenix Health & Safety created the ‘Career Welfare Index’, so here are the happiest jobs with the highest pay in the UK:
The ‘Career Welfare Index’ is based on five key indicators:
- Quality of work environment
- % of people who love their job
- % of people who hate their job
- Number of non-fatal injuries
- Median annual earnings
What did the findings show?
Desk jobs dominate the top 4 spots of the Career Welfare Index, whereas Retail, Manufacturing, and Transportation & Distribution hit the bottom of the Index. These are not the industries with the lowest pay though, that goes to the Hospitality & Leisure industry.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the top 7 industries of the Career Welfare Index are also the best paid industries.
Media/Marketing/PR & Sales
The best industry for overall welfare across all 5 indicators is Media/Marketing/PR & Sales. This industry has the lowest number of workers who want a better working environment, as well as the lowest number of workers who hate their job.
This isn’t much of a surprise considering many media and marketing companies try to recruit the best talent by offering the most fun workplace possible, with extra perks and an excellent work culture.
Media/Marketing/PR & Sales is also the second highest group of workers who love their job, their salary wasn’t to be laughed at, being 33% above the national average.
Legal
The industry that has the biggest satisfaction highs and lows is the Legal industry; not only do they love their jobs the most, they also hate their jobs the most. However, fear not, this is compensated with joint highest salary and safest job, sharing this spot with the Financial Insurance Services and Accountancy industries.
This has given the legal industry the joint second-best career welfare index, along with IT & Telecoms. If you fancy yourself as a legal eagle, then this is a fantastic career to get into.
IT & Telecoms

Financial Insurance Services
The Financial Insurance Services industry ranks 4th on the career welfare index with the joint safest and best paid industry in the UK. If you want a steady career with great prospects, then this could be the industry for you.
Accountancy
If you work in Accountancy, you share the highest pay and the safest job along with the Legal and Financial Insurance Services industries. The Accountancy industry has the second lowest group of workers who hate their jobs. If you enjoy working with numbers then this would be a fantastic career for you.
